I'm just curious if there is anything in Kubuntu (or Linux in general) like "safe mode."

Re: Is there anything like "safe mode" in Kubuntu?
It's the second option following each main kernel in grub. That option boots to a red and blue console menu where you can chose one of several options:
(IF I remember these correctly -- I haven't had to use the recovery kernel for months)
continue on with the regular boot
boot into vesa graphical screen
boot into root console with net
boot into root console without net

Oh, I used to use grub, but I decided that I was tired of Windows XP, so I decided to reinstall Kubuntu as the only operating system. Would it still work if you boot directly to Kubuntu?

When you boot, the Grub menu will have, for each kernel you have installed, the following below each kernel boot entry:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.xx-xx-generic (recovery mode)Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
