Kubuntu 10.04: DVI-connection unavailable, only VGA working [UPDATED]

    Hello again.

This time I'm having trouble with getting the DVI-connection to work.
My video card (Ati Radeon X1950 GT) has one DVI, one VGA and one S-video output.
I have both cables connected to my monitor at the moment (since my attempts to get the DVI working have been unsuccesful).

Here are some outputs which may be relevant:
(A part of) dmesg | grep drm
    Code:
    [ 18.678144] [drm:edid_is_valid] *ERROR* Raw EDID:

        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
I've read some threads about this problem, but none of them have been helpful this far.

    Thanks in advance,
    k

Re: Kubuntu Karmic (9.1), DVI-connection unavailable, only VGA working

Can you post your complete xorg.conf file?

You might also want to try a live CD of Lucid and see if your DVI works. Lucid doesn't require xorg.conf and xrandr and should find your DVI monitor without you having to do anything. Lucid is out in 11 days which might affect your willingness to mess around with Karmic...

Check your cable and connectors to make sure there are no bent pins.

      This my not solve your problem, but in your monitor section of xorg.conf, you can turn off edid and input your monitor settings manually;

      Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
      HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0
      VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
      Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
      Option "Dpi" "100x100"
      Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"

Obviously, substitute your own frequencies and DPI and have a correct modeline

Re: Kubuntu Karmic (9.1), DVI-connection unavailable, only VGA working

In addition to upgrading to 10.04, I've been trying all kinds of things on xorg.conf during the past few days but nothing has worked so far.

I stumbled upon this link, which sounds promising:
        https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#Rad...deon_combios.c

        This too seems related:
        https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...ch/000843.html

Being such a newbie, I don't know how to apply these quirks. The 1680x1050@60 via VGA connection works fine. The DVI works fine (through boot-up BIOS stuff) until the system touches linux. Any ideas?

Re: Kubuntu 10.04: DVI-connection unavailable, only VGA working [UPDATED]

Well, no offense intended, but if you're a self-admitted newbie maybe relying on a beta version OS isn't such a good idea?

It sounds as though you should be trying out 9.04 or 8.10 instead of 10.04.

How about trying another distro all-together?

Try a live cd version of PCLinuxOS. It's very stable, very fast, and has a great forum for help.

I spent a lot of time trying to get things to work in Karmic (9.1). I thought it would be just a matter of configuring everything properly, but it starts to seem that this problem is related to my X1950GT. Maybe I should look into other distros then.

I did a little searching of my own and saw a lot of recent issues related to your card and the newest kernels.

Thats why I thought maybe and older kernel or xorg version might actually help.
