[SOLVED]Questions about installation procedure.

This problem has been solved. I had to install Kubuntu from the live disk menu, and that's why it wasn't installing correctly I think. I gave in and gave Kubuntu full control over my hard drive.

I'm sorry, but can you be a little more succinct and format your text? Bullet points, paragraphs, that sort of thing. My eyes get confused just looking at that much block text...

I can't remember the version of linux but it was unlike any version I had ever seen before. I had looked up info on the OS and heard that the version was supposed to be perfect for a computer that had a hard drive malfunction.

IF- you have a hard drive faling then ENEY OS you install will eventualey fale/geekout ........

you could posabley run a live USB with persistent right back........but it would nead to be large 4-8Gig+ and realey not a long term salution.

One thing that I think doesn't help is the fact that this laptop came with only 512mb of DDR2 Ram, when I was pretty sure Windows Vista's minimum RAM requirements were 1GB of RAM. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, because Vista did actually run on this machine, if rather slow.

I agrey...........vista dose nead at least 1 Gig of ram 2 to work well..................but Kubuntu should work well with 512 and say......a Gig or 2 of swap space.............BUT if you hard drive IS faling that nead's to be fixed first..........IE: replaced

I have 2 boxes with 383MB-RAM and 2Gig swap partitions that run KK OK with 555-600 MHz CPU's

SO...........
1-check the cd .......run the check cd for defecks at the start screen (whar you get to choose run live,install,ect,ect

2-run it live and see if it will boot all the way to the desktop........if not you may have a bad CD

3-let us know if you get that far...............

First I would like to know the best way to dual boot Vista and Kubuntu 9.10, a tutorial or guide would be awesome.

Second I would like to know if I could use Virtual Box as a replacement for Vista, seeing as how it keeps telling me that my Windows Key is invalid even though it is stuck to the bottom of my laptop.

Based on my experience, probably not. If you install Windows in Virtual Box, Microsoft will still insist on getting inside your computer to validate your copy.

Third if I have to dual boot Vista/Kubuntu is there an easy way to downgrade my mom's laptop back to XP and then use the Windows Key that would eventually become available?

I can get all the way to the desktop, but if I let it load completely, the mouse and keyboard stop working. My usb mouse and built in keyboard on my laptop work at the beginning of the start up and don't have any problems. Although if I leave the laptop for too long the I/O devices stop working. I think that might be a driver problem, but I'm not sure if Kubuntu has those kind of problems.

Okay I think I fixed this problem. It fixed itself.
