I just got home from vacation, and the day before I came back I burned all the photos I had taken to a DVD+R on a windows XP machine, then verified the disk was good by loading it up on a laptop with Vista. My Kubuntu desktop is the only computer I have at home with a DVD drive, but when I insert the DVD+R with my pics on it, I get a few seconds of flashing lights, then nothing. The DVD drive recognizes data CD-R and commercial video DVD just fine, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. Please help, I really want those photos!

Does your dvd drive support dvd+rw as opposed to dvd-rw?HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

Well, the DVD contains 'data' written to by Windows XP. That likely means the pictures/other data files on the DVD are ntfs format. Is your Kubuntu configured to read ntfs files?Windows no longer obstructs my view.

In your Widoze machine, what shows when you do a directory listing of the DVD? What files are listed, and what are their file extensions? Are there any 'meta-data' files included?Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I no longer have access to any windows machines (I burned the DVD on my stepdad's computer while on vacation). When I verified that the DVD had burned using my mom's laptop, it was just as it should be - one folder named "Will's pictures" which contains a few folders, all of which contain jpg's. There could be meta data files on there, but mom's laptop wasn't configured to show hidden and system files, so I don't know for sure.Comment

With the DVD in your drive, on your PC, can you see the contents from a console? If you can, and you can navigate the DVDs directories, then try copying 'a file' from it to your PC. See if the copied file is visible from within Dolphin or Gwenview. If it is, then just copy the entire DVD contents to your PC.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Okay, so the strangest thing just happened. I inserted a data CD-R (with data on it), and the device notifier popped up telling me that the disc had been detected. I did not choose any of the actions, but instead went into Konsole and checked /media/cdrom0 and /media/cdrom1, both of which were empty. I went back to the device notifier and selected "Open with File Manager". Dolphin opened, I went back into Konsole and checked /media/cdrom0 and the files and directories from the CD-R were listed there. I tried to eject the disc but got a message saying the device was busy, so I closed Dolphin and did "cd /" in Konsole, then ejected the CD-R. So far, this is all normal, expected behavior.
After removing the CD-R, I inserted the DVD+R and closed the door. Almost immediately, device notifier popped up saying that it found Optical Disc 100310_1531. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, hence my post here, but this is what SHOULD happen. I was able to open the DVD+R in Dolphin and copy all my photos with no trouble whatsoever.
Now normally I would say this problem is solved, but is it really? While I was able to retrieve my photos, I have no idea why it worked on this one occasion, but not the other dozen or so before now.Comment
