This topic has been discussed extensively on this forum. The most recent thread is HERE.

This is what PeerBlock is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeerBlock

        This is what it does:
It is capable of blocking incoming and outgoing connections based on IP blacklists. The system is also capable of blocking custom ranges, depending upon user preferences.
The thread I cited specifically addresses applications and methods for IP blacklists, both specifically and for ranges of IP addresses, blocking websites, etc..

If you want an application similar to PeerBlock then try iplist, and this URL shows you how to install the repository from which you can download and install a deb package for Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Another Linux version similar to PeerBlock is MoBlock, and it is available from here.

Can't a router do this just as well?

Hey, we don't want to get too simple here... we'll leave the impression that Linux is easy to use!

                  unlike MoBlock:

I only scanned the FAQ and setting it up looks to be incredibly easy (good for us old foggies ) to set up.

that iplist dose look good ........for total web/net blocking.

BUT if you just want to filter torrent trafick the default Kubuntu torrent clyent Ktorrent has a IP filter plugin that uses peerGuardian list's from bluetack.co.uk or blocklist.org

of corse if you want to filter ALL net trafick then somthing like iplist is the way to go.

"Peerblock" is a windows program that automates network traffic tools for Windows users.

There isn't a linux version of it.

If you want on-point suggestions on how to accomplish what you want, you'll have to ask in more on-point way. Try the link in my sig for suggestions...

As far as the topic goes: I use free, simple and downloadable host files to block advertisement and porno sites. Works pretty well, although you have to update to be comprehensive.

I know this thread is over a year old, but wanted to say thanks to Vinny for the suggestion for the IP filter within KTorrent. This was exactly what I was looking for, and didn't know it existed before reading this thread!
