    Re: HELP NEEDED!!!!

some of the themes do not work correctly and some themes that do work correctly don't install correctly from the "Get New Stuff Button" (for anything that uses it). the reason is that some people insist on using a mirrors like rapidshare or megaupload this disrupts the dl script. you can tell these ones with bad or time delayed links, because there will be no progress updated when installing them.others even small ones will at least fill the progress quickly., as for manual installing themes it mainly depends on the "theme" your trying to install. in short your extract the downloaded file and move it to another folder (depending on what kind of theme it is). for now i suggest you only consern your self with the new themes that you can install with "get new stuff" and learn the os a bit further before you try to manually install anything.

items that have support for get hot new stuff, based on kde 4.4

              Re: HELP NEEDED!!!!

As a starter guide you can do a lot worse than download this

              http://www.tuxradar.com/linuxstarterpack

Be aware though that it's ubuntu focused and it covers Linux in general and won't say too much about KDE. Most of it is pretty relevant to you though.

Can't see whether anyone else has advised on this so I will (I did promise!).

You can expand the list of applications you can get hold of by enabling additional repos. Open synaptic and select settings (at least I think it is)/repositories.

Browse through the tabs - you can enable the "partner" repository (for stuff like adobe reader or Sun Java) or if you select the "other" tab and click "add" and then paste in the box the following:

              Code:
              ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
By then selecting close and reloading you will have KDE 4.4.1 available for download and install. Try the last bit on your home machine first (unless you are the boss of course!)

                  Re: HELP NEEDED!!!!

Yes, KDE is kubuntu and gnome is for kde. However, those are merely the default desktops, if you don't like one you can simply install the other, hence you can run gnome without having to get a ubuntu disk. I personally wouldn't know why you would want to run gnome, now KDE 4 is as stable as it is, although there was a time in the early days of development when I used to have them both in case KDE went pear-shaped. However, it is a very personal thing. Most people are here because they love the big K

All the key settings for KDE are in start/system settings.

Don't get yourself fired, better to play on your home machine I think.

                        Re: HELP NEEDED!!!!

The KDE Control panel was a feature of KDE3. The site you are looking at is 2005 vintage at which the current KDE desktop will have been kde 3.3 or 3.4 so things have come a long way since then.

The component you are referring to was called kcontrolas you have identified. I believe it is now redundant. However, if you look under the headings in the KDE control centre, you will find them all within start/system settings. The problem with the kde control centre is that it was precisely that - you had to look elsewhere to setup non-kde-related items.

ohhhhhhh lol that explains alot... though i was going crazy for a second...

followed instructions and all sorts to try to find this control panal lol...

do you know if there is anything in KDE 4 to customise the desktop, icons etc etc and save it to a file.

so if i am feeling for a dark GUI i just add this special file and hey presto all my settings are X or if i am feeling in a bright mood ill add a section file and BOOM blue GUI.

                          hope this make sense

                                Re: HELP NEEDED!!!!

First, right click on a blank area of the desktop and select "unlock widgets".
Then, right-click again and select "add widgets".
When the widgets ribbon appears locate the button on the top left that says "get new widgets"

A dialog will appear. Wait a few seconds and it will populate itself. On the right are sorting options. Select the one you feel is most appropriate. Wait a few more seconds for the list of widgets to repopulate. As you scroll down the list more will appear. When you reach the bottom of the list wait a few seconds and more will appear.
When you see one you want click on its "Install" button. After the widget is downloaded the "Install" button becomes the "uninstall" button. Have fun!
