    KDE 4.4 crashes a lot and GRUB error

    Hi there
    Don't know what I've done but have noticed recently that KDE 4.4 crashes a lot more than earlier versions. More worryingly, now when I try to reboot, I've noticed on 2 occasions over last 3 days a GRUB error as well that prevents me from booting up. Grub error reads:

    "alloc magic is broken at 0x7ff99b50 Aborted. Press any key to exit."

    The first time I got this error, I didn't write it down but I'm sure it referred to "free magic"

    So. what is "Magic" and is this a software bug or early warning signs of pending hard drive failure?

    "Crashes a lot" doesn't say anything. Can you be more specific?

    Does KDE close and kick you back to the login screen?
    Or, does it kill the xserver and drop you to a console screen?
    Or, is it just plasmoids that are quiting (they usually restart themselves automatically).

    Or,

    As far as the grub bug, I'd use synaptic and reinstall it.

      The crashes manifest themselves in three ways:

      1) Firefox closes itself whislt browsing. Sometimes to desktop. Sometimes to login screen

      2) Kwin and Plasma crash sometimes recovering, sometimes to a black screen and sometimes to a frozen desktop where I can't move the cursor or anything and I have to reboot

      3) KDE 4 crashes to a login screen. Typically when I log back in, it will crash quickly again to black screen and I have to reboot

      It is when I reboot that the Grub error manifests itself
      Should I remove and re-install the grub-pc file?

        Your symptoms sound more like a hardware problem than software...

          I haven't made any hardware changes . Do you think my hard disk is playing up? I didn't have this level of problems before the 4.4 upgrade....

            A power supply problem would not manifest those symptoms (rather, the PC would re-boot). However, I have seen a defective memory module do what you describe.
