    Installation Conundrum

Hi - I Hope someone can help with this, I feel a bit newbie...

Just managed to install kubuntu 9.10 64bit version, as a dual boot with (at the moment) debian, which is a 32bit version and working fine.

During the install i needed to switch to safe graphics mode as the line "starting init crypto disks" kept appearing and then nothing happened (left it overnight even!).

Using the safe graphics mode i managed the install, but now, when i boot from the hard drive i just get the command line login (which does login to my username).

In addition to all that, from the first time i put the CD in the drive the initial recognition takes ages (3 to 4 minutes) before continuing. What have i done to deserve these problems?

Could the problems be cos of the dual boot 32/64bit issue (debian 32bit works fine with my graphics card)?
or maybe i am just cursed...

    HELP

    Re: Installation Conundrum

    Hi,
I am not sure about the lack of graphics problem, but i had a similar issue with the boot up hanging for 3 min on my last install.
    Check
    sudo fdisk -l
is there any warning about partitions? if so that might be your problem - only a guess. Anyway i "solved" the problem by a fresh install - sorry not much help.
    Thanks:<br />Using a Toshiba A300-21H ,3GB ram,Intel Core2Duo 2Ghz,Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD,intel wifi link 5100. Tux wants you!

      No.

      Possibly.

Seriously, the first thing I would suspect is the possibility of a bad burn of the CD. Did you (a) verify the md5sum on the downloaded ISO file, and (b) burn it at 4X or 8X speed?

The symptom of "boots to text console", with no other apparent problems, usually indicates a video framebuffer issue. Take a look at #2 on the FAQs in my signature. You can press F4 on the boot menu, and then try different options to get past that problem.

        Re: Installation Conundrum

thanks for your help - it turns out that the solution was patience....
firstly, exactly 3 minutes was taken to tell me that i had a "udevadm settle timeout 180s", with usb 1-3: config #1 chosen from 1 choices.

After that i got to the manual login screen, and again, 3 miutes (180s) was taken before the kde splash came up and all was okey dokey, except with very small resolution, which i tried to change but all other resolutions gave me junk.

When i look at the screen log the following is displayed "vdevd [133]:worker [138] failed devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02:0" and in another place "/sys/devices/pci000.../dim/controlD64(1000)" followed by "dim/card 0 (1001)".

What is going on here? I have a new computer with a simple intel graphics card, why is kubuntu throwing up these issues?

        any help would be appreciated...

          Re: Installation Conundrum

I think you're going to have to tell the rest of the story before anyone will have a clue how to help.

          - what is the make and model of your computer?
          - which version of Kubuntu are you attempting to run?
          - what is plugged into the USB ports when you try to boot?
          - use lspci -v to list the main components of your system, and post that

            ok dibl - here goes

the computer is "home built" - Intel Core 2, 2GB ram, currently dual boot with debian 32B & kubuntu 9.10 64Bit (KDE4.3) - i.e. the latest version

I think the usb device causing that problem is the logitech camera.
