my sound doesnt work on kuuntu 9.10

login sound plays but there is no sound in vlc or any other media player, and no sound on Internet videos such as youtube. the system volume is all the way up as well. How do i fix this

There should be a speaker icon in you system tray (bottom right in you screen)
Right-click gives a tiny menu.
Choose "Show mixer" (or equivalent).
You will see a number of controls. And you can get more under settings.
My guess is that one or more of these controls are disabled/muted.
Play around with them till you see what they do and which ones you need.
