Kubuntu does not recognize new DSL Modem?

My ISP changed my DSL Modem brand/model and now Kubuntu can't connect to the internet, since I could connect with the old modem I suspect Kubuntu does not recognize new DSL Modem, I looked all over the settings and hardware lists but couldn't find a single reference to the modem, any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? The new modem is a Thomson TG585V7.

    Thanks.

The simplest solution, when you have a DSL modem, is to purchase a router to connect between your PC and the modem. The router handles the DSL modem, and your OS deals with the router. Routers are standard fare for any computer, and Linux will see it and work with it.

Are you telling me there is no other way of fixing this problem than to buy a router?

No. Just that it's the 'simplest' way. Routers themselves handle the negotiations with the modem. You, or the OS, don't have to do a thing. In fact, the OS isn't even aware that there is a modem. All it sees is the router.

If you choose to deal with the DSL modem itself, you probably have some work ahead of you. Have you contacted your Internet Support at your ISP?

          What's the output of "ifconfig"

Here's mine as an example. I also have a DSL modem.
          Code:
          $ ifconfig
          eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0b:db:ce:82:61

I didn't know your experience level. Sorry.

Type Alt+F2, then type in "konsole" (without quotes) and return. That will bring up a bash shell. Type inside that the command "ifconfig" (without the quotes)

Ok I will take notes and check tomorrow at home and let you know.

One more question should I copy/paste the info you posted above on my ifconfig file if different?

Yes, you can select all the output from "konsole" then push the middle button of your mouse to copy here.

Also I found the following discussion with a very similar situation to mine, I hope there's something useful here: Thomson TG585v7 router set up

In case you don't have, here's the setup guide for the router.

This thread on Nabble deals with the same problem you are experiencing with a Thompson TG585v7 router set up. It's lengthy, and the cliff-hanger, like most stories, is at the very last post. The poster says he solved the problem, but doesn't say exactly how. It involves removing/commenting entries in the /etc/network/interfaces file.

                            No solution yet.

Should I reinstall Kubuntu so that it recognizes my modem?

I just looked up the manual for that gateway here http://www.thomsonbroadbandpartner.c...le.php?id=5349
This is a combination router/modem as most dsl services provide these days. It should automatically give your pc an ipaddress as long as your interface is set to DHCP which it should be unless you changed it. If you don't get an ipaddress try assigning a static one like 192.168.1.100. Did you simply try powering off the gateway and waiting 30 secs before powering it up? I can't believe it is not set to DHCP on the lan by default.
