What version of Windows do you have? I assumed XP since grub tagged it that way. If you have Windows7 we have another problem.

Even so I think the problem is Windows(?) is on the second partition. What is on that first partition, sda1.

I think that's why fixmbr didn't work. It looked to sda1 for boot files.

Yeah, I have no clue what's on sda1. According to disk management is just says:

Is this a Dell computer? If so, I would hate for you to remove a needed partition. Do you know how to make clone backups - Clonezilla, partclone, partimage?

What Windows version do you have installed?

If XP did you do these steps:
1) load Windows XP install disk
2) install up to point where it says Repair system using the recovery console
3) select that option.
4) choose the windows system it finds when it says choose what windows system you want to repair.
5) type FIXMBR.

No, this is an Asus laptop F3J series.

I'm running XP and I have the recovery console in a usb drive (the cd that came with my laptop doesn't have the recovery console option). I did try the FIXMBR on C:\WINDOWS and C:\, and I still get GRUB, not really sure what's the RECOVERY partition for.

Hey dude dont panic, i had the same prob when i started kubuntu cause i also have it installed in an external drive.

So look follow all this steps and you'll get it up full and running both systems.I wouldnt hurt if u read some info like i did in my times, here u got the info, its pretty large and lots of stuff so take a deep breath and when u have energy enough get to it, although dont rush (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081671.0). Now ill give u the steps to fix ur computer cause i can uderstand that u dont feel like reading complex stuff when ur a noob u just want to get it fix already :P


Lets start:

1- FIrst ur going to need to make a partition on ur internal drive (ur computer) and install the grub there, so that when u unplug ur external drive it doesnt show up error grub not found or whatever. Take gparted, install it on kubuntu, make a partition from ur internal drive that will be the smallest in size that u can and make it FAT32.

2-Once ur done with that go to terminal and write startx -- :1 (to go in root mode in another sesion) once ur in that just go to the Root folder and find a folder called boot. Copy the boot folder and paste it in ur fat32 partition that u created.

3-Once ur done just do this write in the terminal:
Sudo grub
Sudo geometry (hd0)
Sudo geometry (hd1)
Identify which drive is your Fat32 drive (either hd0 or hd1). Let's say it is hdz.
Identify the partition you made for GRUB. It will be (hdz,x), where x is the partition number. The first partition on drive z is 0 (so x=0); the second is partition 1 (so x=1); etc.
Then install GRUB to MBR of drive hdz using the GRUB files in your dedicated GRUB partition (hdz,x):
grub>root (hdz,x)
grub>setup (hdz)
grub>quit
and then re-boot to test it.

3-Then reboot and it should display 2 options, windows and kubuntu and both should work. If not show me whats written in your menu.lst in the boot folder.

One thing more....tell me what is ur status right now...cause i think some people is messing u up and confusing cause they didnt saw the solution and u might get everything worse...The only one who saw the prob is snowhog cause he asked u the blkid command for the menu lst.

So tell me can u run windows? can u run kubuntu?? what error do u get?? and besides that does grub still appears? what did u do to MBR? A FIXMBR??

Thanks for the help, right now I'm able to get on Windows and Kubuntu. I just decided to leave it this way for now. I'm going to way until I reformat my computer but this time I'm using Wubi to install kubuntu.
