Can't find the Games I'm downloading!

    Total Kubuntu newbie here.

I have a computer for the kids that runs Ubuntu, and their favorites are Gcompris and Childsplay. When I created a virtual Machine on the Windows 7 box to test Kubuntu, I can't find links to the above programs that I downloaded off the start menu.

Both programs installed, and I can see the files under /usr/share but I can't figure out what to do with it.

I also downloaded a random game from the KPackageKit, but now can't find the corresponding link on the startup up menu.

I really like the look of Kubuntu, but under Gnome Ubunutu, the above games would appear in the drop down menu under "Education" and away we go.

Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss a step somewhere? Thanks!

So you have Kubuntu running in a VM inside of Windows 7? Have you shut-down and restarted the VM since downloading/installing the games? Sometimes it takes a restart before programs appear in the K Menu.

Just gave that a try and nothing.

Does Kubuntu not like running on a VM?

        It's OK.

Occasionally programs do not appear in the Menu. The Menu needs to be edited and the program added manually.

        Try:
        1) From the Menu choose "Run" and input: gcompris ; or
        2) Press Alt+F2 and input: gcompris ; or
        3) From Konsole Terminal input: gcompris

If these work you need to edit your Menu

It also makes a difference (sometimes) how the new program (package) was obtained. If you selected and installed it via the native package manager, Synaptic, or from the CLI using apt-get install, then a menu launcher should be added to the K Menu. On the other hand, if you downloaded a .deb file from a web site and installed it with gdebi, you are depending on the skills and knowledge of the packages developer/maintainer/packager to have put all the relevant parts into the package so that a menu entry will be placed in the K Menu.

            Success!

At the terminal prompt, I typed in "gcompris", then I get a message back saying that the program wasn't installed. Even though I could see the files, I figured Linux wouldn't lie to me, so I went ahead and typed what is suggested

            "sudo apt-get install gcompris"

and now it works, with a bonus link off the K menu.

Now the kids will be happy.
