New to Linux and Having partition problems

    Hi all.

I dual booted Kubuntu 9.10 about a week ago on my laptop with Windows XP and I used 10gb for kubuntu installation and I have a HDD of 56gb, while using kubuntu my laptop crashed twice and both times it corrupted kubuntu files. I had both the operating systems installed on the same partition C:. When the files got corrupted Windows told me that I had some corrupted files and that i had to use chkdsk so I did and both times I had to reinstall kubuntu. Now when I look at the hard disk details it says that only 20gb out of 56gb is left and this is due to the other kubuntu files that I installed on the partition, My windows does Not have 20gb of programs installed on it. I have got about 6gb occupied by windows and 10gb occupied by kubuntu so that makes it 16gb. How do I retrieve the lost space on the partition without formatting it ? The I am sorry if this kind of question has already been asked.

    Thank you.

We have to clarify your definition of 'dual boot.' Exactly how did you install Kubuntu? I'm going to guess that you used Wubi and installed Kubuntu 'inside of' Windows. Is this the case?

Yes I used the option "Install Inside windows" so I guess I used Wubi.

Wubi installs Kubuntu 'inside' Windows as any other application. You can 'remove' - uninstall - Kubuntu through the Control Panels Add Remove Programs.

It did not let me uninstall at first when I tried doing that the Wubi Installer said that I had corrupted files and that I had to fix them first so I used chkdsk in windows. After that I uninstalled kubuntu and then reinstalled it, the same thing happened. Now this is my third installation of Kubuntu and it says only 20gb is left.

Well, this is a Windoze issue. But...

I would rerun chkdsk. Then, I would uninstall Kubuntu. Then, I would run Windows Defrag utility and then check on the amount of space is reported as unused.

I used the defragmentation utility and chkdsk however that didnt fix the problem but I fixed it by removing folders named found.000 and found.001 in the root/host directory.
