it stats to login then it returns to the login scree however if i switch it to gnome it will login?

What version of Kubuntu do you have, 9.10.?

Also if when it returns to login prompt have you tried to login again?
I found it having to take my login twice in order for it to work.

yes im running 9.10 and i tried to login a second time but it still does the same thing

Here' one discussion at ubuntu, about login loop. Some were using kubuntu with same issue. Something regarding the difference between screen resolution and login resolution.

thank you that was helpful however im having a hard time changing the resolution, what would be the easiest way to change the two resolutions to match
