Ok so where is my Software

I am following a great guide called Installing Software in Ubuntu. I just used the commands:
    sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install mozilla-thunderbird firefox gimp inkscape juk wine

and I believe things worked OK.

Problem is, silly me I cannot locate the packages I supposedly installed and I want to bring them as shortcuts to the desktop.

You might have to restart X. Press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and log back in and the programs should be in the K menu.
