Good news for Apple junkies and a burning question...

hey everybody, first off, i picked up kubuntu and installed it on my macbook pro using a vmWare type application. It worked perfectly. Good for Apple junkies like me, Yes? No. I am entering a territory where the only CLI that im familiar with is darwin UNIX. Are there any significant differences that a n00b like me should be concerned with?

    Welcome to Kubuntu!

It sounds like you would be more familiar with the differences than most. AFIK, not a lot of Mac people use Linux and I don't know if many here use *BSD as well as Linux. I personally really like FreeBSD, particularly because of it's stability - as in not constantly changing. From what I understand Darwin is similar, but has quite a number of commands of it's own, at least from what I saw here: http://www.matisse.net/OSX/darwin_commands.html Not a big deal, you just might miss those. That said, you will find that the Linux is very UNIX like and intuitive to CLI users. What might bother you is that the directory structure changes from time to time and distribution to distribution. Usually it is something as simple as going one directory deeper, but it can still be annoying.

I honestly don't know squat about Darwin but assume it is very similar to other BSD variants. Linux is not as well documented as, say FreeBSD. There is no up-to-date handbook which tells you how to do everything. That makes searching and asking questions an essential part of the experience. You have already done the first step in mastering Linux - getting in touch with a knowledgeable and friendly community like this.

What version of Kubuntu did you go for? Tell us your experience.
