    Internet connection on Kubuntu

Hi i'm new here. I was using Windows xp before i realize that Linux is more cool and more stable system than Windows. My question is: Can i connect to the internet (with Kubuntu) with the modem i used on Windows because in the modem's manual it
says that supports only Windows machines but i read something about drivers for this modems (The connection is ADSL and the modem D-Link DSL-360 R)
If someone can help me please post. Thanks

if in dought you can allwas try the Karmic 9.10 cd live (runing off the cd and not instaled) to try it.
and see if it works or what you half to do to make it work.

IF that's a allwase on conection it should just work .....if you half to call out for a conection thare may be some further configuring ...I dont know for shure as I dont have one of those

but get the livecd and try it you may be happy.

The "supports Windows" is meaning that if you call with an issue with the modem, the people at D-Link will only help you if you are on a Windows box.
I've used Motorola DSL and an AT&T U-verse box and have never had any issues at all.
      You should be fine.

If you already have this modem working with windows, then you will have no problems. Your computer should automatically connect. If you should need to access the settings of the modem once you are connected, I'm pretty sure the setup page for that modem is at 192.168.1.1.

@Detonate: forgive me if i am wrong.
but won't it need first for karmic to 'recognise' the modem?

              You are forgiven.

It will automatically connect to the modem.

                Re: Internet connection on Kubuntu

This is complicated. I created a connection in Ubuntu 8.10 and i connected to the internet. But
in Kubuntu 9.10 when i create the new DSL connection in the menu for connecting i can't find it. And in the menu there is only Auto eth0. The modem is D-Link DSL-360R. Any suggestions how to solve this because I'm total begginer? Thank you in advance.

I not sure what you mean by "Create a DSL connection".

                  Are you connected?

                  Open a terminal and enter:

                  Code:
                  ifconfig
                  and post the results.

I see that i confused you Detonate so i will explain my problem again. i'm running Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic on 32-bit and i'm using a D-Link DSL-360 R modem and i'm not connected to the internet. My question is: How to create a DSL connection
(on Kubuntu 9.10 if its possible) to connect to the internet . I hope that now you can help me

I can not find this model (D-Link DSL-360 R) on D-Link's web sight. How old is it? Where did you get it?

                          Re: Internet connection on Kubuntu

When you set up this modem with windows, you established your "DSL Connection" . There probably some instructions for initial setup provided by your DSL provider. So the modem is already setup. All you should have to do is plug the cable from your Kubuntu machine to it and you should automatically connect. Please post the out output of ifconfig in a terminal.

                            Re: Internet connection on Kubuntu

The thing is that Kubuntu 9.10 doesn't recognize the modem but Ubunut 8.10 does. In Kubuntu 9.10 there is a litle icon (the icon is on the taskbar) where you click on it and it shows menu with the connections Auto eth0, connect to other connections, Wireless and other but there is no DSL even when i create in the network manager. I read something about this problem on internet and some people says that this is a bug. If you have other solutions post. By the way this forum is useful

The modem never shows up in the network manager, only devices installed on your computer. PLEASE post the output of ifconfig. I will not answer any more posts until you do.
