Sound card shuts down.

Hi everyone,

I have a gateway nv52 with the new kubuntu installed. Just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing their sound cards shutting down at times?

The only thing I can pinpoint is that when the processors get about 70* degrees F. that the sound card shuts down for a short time. Sometimes the sound returns after a few minutes without the temperature going down more than a few degrees. Other wise I reboot and it works fine.

I'm totally unfamiliar with your hardware so I may be missing the point, but that sounds like a cooling problem that SHOULD be independent of OS. Those things are normally handled either by the hardware, or in the BIOS, or both. Do you have the same problem in windoze?

Only run Kubuntu. I would think your right though.. Just seems odd.

The only thing I can suggest is to open up the case (if you can) and blow out the dust that accumulates around the chips. That stuff tends to block ventilation.

BUT 70F is not a high case temperature for working electronics (that's lower than summer room temperature). Accordingly, I wonder whether the problem is related to temperature at all. I'd look for an alternative cause; such as volume cranked up to the max, erratic volume control, bad solder joint. The first two are trivial, the third requires MAJOR computer repair. Most likely, it's somewhere in between.

It could be nothing more than your external speakers. What is your audio hardware setup? Also do you have another OS installed that you can compare.
