Unreadable Task Bar

New to Kubuntu and I can't seem to get in, my task bar and pop-ups from it are nothing but dots and/or vertical lines. Obviously I can't navigate anywhere to even try it out.

I don't have mush experience but have used Ubuntu and Xubuntu successfully on this computer and others.

Likely a video card issue. Reboot. From the menu - you do see the menu? - select the option to use VESA graphics - F4 or F6 I think - and see if you get a working desktop. The screen resolution will be not what you want, but if it displays correctly - you can see everything - then we can work on identifying and configuring your graphics card/controller.
