    Getting Started with Kubuntu

    Hello all. I have absolutely no technical background in computers and am completely new to Linux and Kubuntu and although I successfully installed Kubuntu, I am having major problems trying to establish basic applications: my knetwork manager tries to activate my Eth0 connection, but it failed every time. I am also having trouble using Dragon video player, KB torrent, and Amorak, with Kubuntu telling me that they need packages installed. Lastly, I tried installing Firefox, only to have Kubuntu tell me that the package was already installed, and yet I cannot find Firefox at all! Please send me your feed back as soon as possible!

    Re: Getting Internet

    Welcome. What version of Kubuntu? Are you using it, and are you connected to the Internet?

        We are going to need to know about your PC that you installed Kubuntu 9.10 on. Make/model - Desktop or Laptop. Make/model of video card/graphics controller. Make of Ethernet controller. How the PC is connected to the Internet - modem or router or ...

        Give us as much information as you can.

            Re: Getting Started with Kubuntu

            Hey there,
            I'm pretty new to the linux / kubuntu scene as well, and i also experienced a few similar problems with dragon player, amarok etc. (although my internet connection worked fine from the get go).

            I think that most of your problems are probably just due to a need to do a bit more research. If you're moving over from windows there's already a wealth of information that can explain how to go about getting the right codecs etc. to get amorok, dragon player working. I'd suggest that you start by having a look under : documentation / how to's in order to get a better grounding.

            also, there are heaps of other options to amarok - which i find a bit pointless personally - dragon player (i use mplayer but there are plenty of options) and KBtorrent. if you can't get one working it's often an easier solution to just download something else (using the package manager). that, of course, is dependent on you getting your internet working, which hopefully someone can help you with (but once again have a look around because the answer's probably already on this site...)

            good luck.

                    Yes, but the problem is that I can see eth0 in the network manager. The trouble is that when I click on that button, it it begins activating the the connection but fails. I was also wondering, after (and if) I get eth0 activated, what else needs to be done to set up an Internet connection? Also, does this apply to 9.10

                        one method is to just use the site's search function. Otherwise have a look under the documentation / how to section of the forum as already mentioned. dibl's top Kubuntu FAQs and answers in the below link might help...

                        as far as your question re : internet connection is concerned, i think it's best i left that to others who know more...

                            I guess I should also add that I bought my copy of Kubuntu from a retailer called the UNIX Academy. Is there a chance that I might have been ripped off?

                              Being that you can download it free, perhaps. Does UNIX Academy gave in support? Or do they just sell packaged distributions.

                              Also what does the output of this command. Here's mine as an example:
                              Code:
                              $ ifconfig
