    Stall when copying large movie files

    A strange problem caused my windows laptop not able to boot so to rescue data on c: i tried to use ubuntu live but couldn't boot as it seemed there's a hardware problem, so i used my old kubuntu 7.10 live cd and it worked, so now I was backing up my data to external hdd except large movie files bigger than say 500 MB, it just stalls without progress... where's the problem ?

    What version of the Kubuntu ?

    How are you copying ? (copy&paste ? commandline ? ...?)
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

    Why there are dead links ?

        Are you sure that you gave it enough time? External hard drives communicate via USB. They are much (10x or more) slower than internal hard drives. Moreover, with large files, you have to empty and refill buffers numerous times. All of which takes time. Unless your talking 10s (plural) of minutes, you may not have a problem.

          I agree with askrieger.

          I recently obtained a WD "My Passport" 320GB USB HD. I copied my entire home account to it. (13.4Gb). Like yours, the copying seemed to hang at times but I just let it continue and did other things. Sometime between 2 and 3 hours it finished. Using KCalc, at 2 Mb/sec that computes to about 1.9 hours.

            @GG: Your timing is consistent with my experience. I had to reload my /home from a WD external USB drive after a catastrophic upgrade (can't recall whether it was Intrepid to Jaunty or Jaunty to Karmic), but 2Mb/sec sounds about right.

              @askrieger
              yeah I gave it enough time, but there's not progress or what so ever it just stops after copying less than 200MB of a 5GB movie file !
              @GreyGeek
              I tried on both my "WD my book essential HDD" and "Sandisk cruzer flash memory" but same result, while I easily copied about 10GB of small files such as photos and mp3.

                Re: Stall when copying large movie files

                Perhaps the file system on the external drive has problems with files larger than some threshold

                    running from a live cd will normally slow everything down aside from your disks both being NTFS.

                    that could be part of your problem run check disk on the disk w/ windows. sometimes if you don't do that first the ntfs3g driver will have issues w/ r/w to ntfs partitions.
