Fonts Too Large in Firefox / KDE

I am not able to get the font size properly adjusted for Firefox in Kubuntu Karmic. I end up having to scroll around more vertically while navigating web pages because of this.

I set System Settings > Fonts > Force fonts DPI to 96 DPI. This worked well for KDE applications but not for Firefox.

I tried messing with GTK+ Appearance settings and it didn't change anything.

I don't remember this being a problem with Kubuntu 9.04 and all I did that time around was set the DPI to 96.

I have attached two screen shots of a website with the viewport set to the same size to demonstrate. The first is from my laptop with Kubuntu 9.10 and Firefox. The second is from my other laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox.

Any suggestions on how to get the fonts back to normal in Firefox + Kubuntu Karmic?

According to some replies to posts here in KFN, the Force DPI to 96 does work, even for Firefox. Have you restarted KDE and/or rebooted since you made the change?

I couldn't see anything wrong with either of those screens so have no idea what you're talking about in that regard. However, I often have different preferences from other people, particularly web authors so I have installed a plugin for FireFox called NoSquint. It makes it really easy to make fonts larger OR smaller. You might like it.

In the first screen shot, the font is larger and pushes everything down further on the screen. It is obvious if you look at the opening paragraph because "layouts," is pushed down to a new line, where as in the second screen shot the paragraph fits perfectly in the box with 3 lines.

This causes display issues on a number of websites, especially when text-based buttons were created with an image background and not enough whitespace was factored in to accommodate for fonts any larger than whatever the web designer used to test the website in.

I, too, am a MAJOR fan of NoSquint. It allows extremely fine tuning of overall page and text size. It's great for people with vision problems.

I noticed that your two identical images are not the same size. The Ubuntu image is 1011 x 622, while the Kubuntu image is 1008 x 581. This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it may indicate a subtle difference in the way that KDE and Gnome are rendering.

I think the difference in screen shot sizes was due to having different Firefox themes installed one each computer, which cause the available viewport sizes to be different. I installed the same theme on both laptops and retook the screen shots so that they are exactly the same dimensions.

Obviously, my previous observation was as wrong as I thought it might be. In which case, I have no idea why Ff is rendering the same page differently in KDE and Gnome. I would have thought that (since you only install Ff once), it should appear the same in either KDE or Gnome.

Try NoSquint, though to get high resolution control of the way web pages appear (on your screen) in Ff.
