i had forgotten that i had installed with wubi, i just assumed it would make no difference

The poster's analysis pointed to yet another Grub 2 bug fwiw. sounded like they weren't going to address it until the next standard release. I figured that's a long time to ask someone to wait to get their Kubuntu back!
