Won't let me type in password on boot

I installed 9.10 using the Alternate CD, now when I try to login, it takes my lowercase username but when I hit Enter and it brings up the password area, when I type, nothing shows up there. Then it says incorrect password and has me try again. What do I do?

    Edit: Now it says
    john@kubuntu:~$

Passwords are case sensitive. Make sure you don't have your CAPS LOCK key on. Also, by default, Kubuntu has a minimum length for user passwords, although, during installation, that isn't enforced. But, once installed, and you reboot and have to provide your password, if it is to short, it won't be accepted.

Nothing shows up when I type in the password area, cursor doesn't move and nothing shows up. It stays blank no matter what I type in. It is not a splash screen but a simple command prompt type login area.

See How To Reset Any Linux Password if you need to change your user password if you have completely forgotten it, or it is to short and so, not being accepted.

I haven't forgotten it, and it is 8 characters long. What is the minimum requirement for password length?

Well I'm doing a re-install and this time I am using the Live CD and not the "Alternate CD" We'll see if it works better. Thanks for your time on this subject

Assuming your name is john, and the machine name is kubuntu, then the login worked just fine. By design, there is no ui feedback while entering passwords at the command line.

Thank you skunk, yes after about 6 tries it finally went to the john@kubuntu:~$ which I assumed had gotten me logged in.

I then looked around on how to get to the desktop environment by typing /etc/init.d/kdm start.

But then it said that kdm was already started and running. Hehe I would like to know how to get to the desktop environment.

Then I sure want to get it to do an auto login so I don't need to do the user/password, (that command I have seen where to edit).

I have downloaded PDF's on the command line entries but I don't see where it has the commands to get to the desktop UI.

Did you try Ctrl+Alt+F7 to switch to the X session? And Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch back to the console session?

Re: Won't let me type in password on boot

CTRL-ALT-F7 just gives me a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of an otherwise black screen. By the way I appreciate your help tremendously. CTRL-ALT-F1 does take me back to the console session. X session does not start.

The blinking cursor probably means that you're logged in. Try "startx", (you need X to start KDE). You should get an error message. If you're lucky it will say that X is running on a different console. Go to THAT console and see what you have. If you're not lucky, you might still get an error message telling you why X failed.
