    Kubuntu 9.10, Hotmail, Thunderbird 3

Using Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (Linux), on an Intel Celeron 1100MHz, 512k.
    My account is hotmail.

    I configured as following:

    INCOMING:
    Server: pop3.live.com
    Port: 995, default 995
    Connection Security: SSL/TLS

    OUTGOING:
    Server: smtp.live.com
    Port : 587, default 465
    also tried port 25
    Connection Security: SSL/TLS

When trying to access account for the first time:
"Mail server does not support secure authentication."

So I unchecked the Secure Authentication boxes in both incoming and outgoing.
Then, when trying to get my mail, I get this reply:
"Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop3.live.com responded: authentication failed"

Please don't ask me silly questions like, "Did you verify your password?"

    Please help.

hmmm....Did you verify your password? j/k

Found this one on M$ site ... https://windowslivehelp.com/community/t/14167.aspx (last post)

Apparently the password length is of some importance ... keep it simple for the techies at M$ max 16 chars length

A: The password alone is not changing anything. I need to keep diggin.

B: Unlike Bill, I didn't exhale, so my thoughts don't go up in smoke! Actually, I make passwords with physical patterns on the keyboard. No memory needed!

Re: Kubuntu 9.10, Hotmail, Thunderbird 3

For everyone going bonkerz over this:

Here is the cause, and the solution:

            CAUSE:
With web-type emails like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, Lycos, maildotcom, etc, we are not supposed to be able to use these desktop mail clients, like Thunderbird, by design. They want us to directly sign in so that we will increase traffic on their servers, so that they can sell more advertising. What people don't realize is that WE are the products. Hotmail, etc, SELLS US to the advertisers, and we all know what that brings us...

            SOLUTION:
Mozdev's WebMail addon/extension for Thunderbird. I have the version labeled for Thunderbird 2, but it seems to work just fine with my Thunderbird 3. I have Kubuntu Linux but as far as I know it is cross-platform, use it on Apple and [shudders] windoez, too.

Here is a simple YouTube tutorial:
            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtFNo__8md8

Here is where to get specifically WebMail:
            http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

            Here is Mozdev's main site:
            http://www.mozdev.org

Here is another Linux resource regarding this:
            http://www.scribd.com/doc/128984/how...birdhotmail-v2

            HEED THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!
Install the basic WebMail module FIRST.
            Restart Thunderbird.
Then, install the module specific to you webmail, install as many as you need.
            Restart Thunderbird.
            Install another module (if needed).
            Restart, etc...
            Configure accounts.

I have Hotmail, Yahoo, and AOL all running just fine. I could not get these accounts to operate any other way. My ISP-based email worked fine from the start. I hope this fixes your problems like it did for me, and dissipates the stress.

            Namaste!
