No problem.

Keep in mind that if the only thing you change is the connections to the motherboard, and you don't like the result (or it won't work), you can always reconnect them back to the current configuration -- there's no harm done.

Well, the install is offering the usual choices, use an entire disk or free space, or manual partition. The first choice, use an entire disk , only shows sda in the drop down, so I don't want that. I don't want to use free space on sda, so I choose the third option, manual. Now I can pick sdb and the ready to install screen shows *only* sdb. Now, two things, again, where do I install GRUB?. And, my sda and sdc drives are not mentioned in this screen. Does that mean they will be removed? Waiting at this point for more knowledgeable guidance.

No no no.

On the Live CD, can you choose "manual" partitioning? If so, that is the way you want to do it, and then you just set the mount points according to the partitions that you already made on that drive. If the Live CD won't give you that option, then you need to download and burn the Alternate Install CD.

Drive /dev/sdb is the one you want. In manual partitioning, you will set /dev/sdb1 as / and /dev/sdb3 as /home. It will find the swap partition by itself.

Ok, dibl. I chose the third option, manual partitioning. But I was concerned that it only showed sdb, but I guess that's ok. I was only concerned because before it always showed the state of sda and sdc, even though I wasn't working with them. And the mount points for / and /home are set, / is 12GB approx and /home is something like 28 GB. Is this correct? I was only concerned because when the drives were on the previous channels , all the drives showed up when I chose manual partitioning, now only sdb shows up. OK?

That sounds about right. As long as you are sure that you're looking at /dev/sdb, we don't care about the other ones at this point. I'm not sure of the exact capacity of those smaller drives, but the numbers sound about right. Let 'er rip.

Remember, after you enter your user name and password, there will come a point where it asks about installing Grub. As soon as you see that screen, STOP and be very careful what you do next. You're going to want to click the "Advanced" or "Special" or whatever the icon is that lets you direct where Grub goes, and you're going to select the MBR of /dev/sda for it.

If it offers you a menu, can you use the "e" key and get a chance to specify a drive and partition? I believe you want (hd1,1). Remember partition numbering has changed in Grub 2 -- the first partition is now "1" versus "0" in legacy Grub.

no menu, just the prompt above. I can do an ls and get a list like HD1,0, etc not sure exactly
