Trying to hook up my computer to my TV, but ran into trouble. Ideas?

I've got a video out on my comp that I've run directly to the TV, but there's no picture, do I need to set up some kind of TV out thing on my computer?

yes you do just have to basicly "enable" the output, first try to do so in
System settings -> Display. and see if its reconized the tv as being hooked up. then try to enable it there. if that doesn't work then,

what kind of video card do you have?
what drivers are installed? (if not sure were you prompted about "restriced drivers" being available after install)
what version of kubuntu are you running?
how is the tv hooked up the the computer (i.e svideo, composite, hdmi etc...)?

Yeah I tried system settings display already and it doesn't recognize my TV, I'm not sure what kind of video card I've got it's free used computer, I'm not sure what drivers are installed right now either. I'm using Xubuntu 9.04, and I've got it hooked up with simple composite video.

from a terminal lspci will list the vid card (and the rest of your hardware) and lsmod will give an idea of the driver.

it apperars that you have an ATI video card. using a radion 9200. check out the un offical ati wiki some might not apply as its mainly for the fglrx driver, but there are links from there to places with more info about the driver your using "radeon". that being said, the process is like this for fglrx users , open amdcccle and set your display options (the radeon driver may have a similar method of setting up tv out)

Pardon me for looking like an idiot but what is "amdcccle" and how do I open it?

i am not sure if you will have amdcccle installed on your machine its part of the fglrx (ati properitary driver) you would open it via alt+f2 and typing in 'kdesudo amdcccle' (no ')

sadly i don't know much about the open source driver for your card (i use the properitary one since my card is supported by it) check the wiki to see if your card is also supported(but i am rather sure its not)
