Can't play DVD's

    Can't play DVD's

    Hi I'm a new user of Kubuntu 9.10. Tried it out on CD first - everything OK so nephew installed it as the main operating system as Vista was going belly up and am so sick of BG being the only person with Administrator privileges

    All went well, I even managed to figure out how to get my wireless recognised and working - all by myself - quite proud of that!

    But I'm having real trouble getting DVD's to play on my DVD/CD Drive (is also capable of writing to DVDs)

    Have tried (in Terminal)

    sudo apt-get install w32codecs
    and got this
    sudo apt-get install w32codecs
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Package w32codecs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
    This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
    is only available from another source
    E: Package w32codecs has no installation candidate
    Have also tried

    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras
    which seemed to go ok and left 2 things (i didn't think to save them ) not needed

    have also tried

    sudo apt-get install libdvdread3
    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
    and got this

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    E: Couldn't find package libdvdread3
    Have just tried to play a DVD again and it is recognised but Dragon PLayer won't do anything with it

    WHAT AM I DOING WRONG If you have the answer please let me know in really simple terms as I really am Incomputent

    PS Forgot to mention, can play CDs in Amarok until it crashes, can't choose which track tho.

    You need to add the Medibuntu Repository.

    Note that it is a 2 part installation 1) Add Repository 2) Add GPG key

    Then add: libdvdcss2

      So then went to GPG KEY
      and got right to this
      It is probably a good idea to set this key as default in your .bashrc. Doing this will allow applications using GPG to automatically use your key.
      Set your key as the default key by entering this line in your ~/.bashrc.
      export GPGKEY=D8FC66D2
      Tried to do this but got this

        You need to open your package manager and edit the sources, as you still have the CD 'active' as a repository.

          I can find Package manager tho - I think!

            1) You added Medibuntu, then updated and then got the GPG key. You should have just added Medibuntu, got the GPG key and THEN updated. I've never bothered with the .bashrc thing.

            2) What Snowhog is talking about...

            I'm sure that there is a shorter and simpler way to do it...Someone will probably come along and tell us both how to do that...Your sources list has the physical CD as a repository, so when you update it looks for it and hence you get the message "Failed to fetch cdrom://Kubuntu 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release i386"

            How I would sort it is to open Konsole Terminal Program and issue the command:
            sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list
            Probably at or near the top you will see probably two lines about the CD. Make them ineffective by putting a # at the beginning of the lines. Save kate and exit kate.

            Then update. Just issue the command:
            sudo apt-get update
            Are you still getting error messges?

              Will try a DVD in a minute.......

              No - still recognising DVD but Dragon Player not going to play it for me

                  @Snowhog. Oops did it again. One of the drawbacks of constantly using Crunchbang at the moment.

                  1)It's giving the error message "W: GPG error: http://packages.medibuntu.org karmic Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783"

                  How did you input the complex command from the Medibuntu page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu ? Did you input by hand, or did you simply copy and paste? TIP: If you have a wheel-mouse or 3-button-mouse highlight the command on the Medibuntu page. Then move your cursor anywhere inside the Terminal and press the wheel or central button. The command will be fully and correctly pasted into the Terminal.

                  2) Alternatively... look at "How to play Encrypted DVDs on Ubuntu Linux" on http://linuxpoison.blogspot.com/2009...on-ubuntu.html

                  It has different methods to install. Depending whether your computer and distro is 32 bit of 64 bit try one of the first two instructions

                    I did it both ways and got the same results

                    Have followed this for both sets of instructions - neither has worked Wasn't sure if it's a 32 or 64 bit system - vista would never let me find out - I didn't have sufficient privileges (*&^*&&^% microsoft!

                    Dragon Player will start up, but will only offer to play a file - won't play the DVD and won't play any individual file either

                    The drive is at least recognising the DVD but I'm not sure if that's worse

                      ...Just about run out of ideas for now...

                      Try a different media player. The most versatile it vlc. It might look ugly in it's plain state but it can be "skinned".

                        I assume you are trying to play a commercial (ie encrypted) DVD. To accomplish that, you need the package libdvdcss2 installed as recommended above.

                        As your background is windows, I'll stick as far as possible to the GUI way.

                        First you need to get a better package manager. There are 2 that are currently better than the default (which is called kpackagekit) which are adept or synaptic. For easy use by a newcomer, I would choose adept, although it will be defunct at some time in the future as it is no longer being developed.

                        Open a terminal and type sudo apt-get install adept
                        Hit Return then enter password then return again. Assuming it offers to install then hit Y.

                        Once the install process has finished it will be available in the menu or a quicker way to get it running will be alt+F2 and type adept in the resulting box. When prompted enter your password.

                        From the interface select sources/edit software sources/and then hit the "other software" tab. That will reveal the repositories you have enabled. You can uncheck the CD one if you wish. Check that the medibuntu repo is shown there and is checked.

                        Hit the close tab.

                        Then select the "search" menu and in the search box type libdvdcss. You should find 2 items pop up - libdvdread4 and libdvdcss2. You can install both if you wish. Once done, that should solve your problem.

                        You can install synaptic instead of adept if you wish. It's a personal thing but I find it less user-friendly.

                        In that case once Synaptic has loaded you follow pretty much the same procedures.

                          Seems that libdvdread4 was installed, but libdvdcss2 wasn't - don't know why, it wasn't for lack of trying

                          But the adept package manager was very easy to use and installed it no problem 8)

                          I have had a quick check and DVD appears to be playing normally, can't sit and watch as it's 2am here (Wales, UK ) and I need sleep.

                          Your instructions were really easy to follow - even though I'm really tired. You are a legend in your own time.

                          Thanks also to everyone who helped to get me through this, you are all BRILLIANT! I'm loving Kubuntu and I'm really loving the support that's available from you guys
