    getting the best outta kubuntu

I know there are over 10,000 packages. I am wondering if there is a guide or a website that lists the recommended packages to install for the kubuntu base to get the full funtionality.

for example I just installed kerry beagle search, for search capabilty.

I would also like to know of some windows app replacements.

If people list what packages that they installed over the base that would be a good help for me and the people who are learning linux.

    Thanks

        gimp image editor
        kaffeine

        games: gltron, planet penguin racer,ennemy-territory...
        openoffice
        nvu
        gftp

          I like:
kget (install, run it once and it'll ask if you want to use it by default in konqueror. It comes by default if you install kde from source, I don't know why it's not a default part of kubuntu-desktop)
          kdevelop
          gimp
          inkscape

          ...but that's just me

What I installed over the base installation

            KDE 3.5.3
            Amarok 1.4
            KOffice 1.5.1
KGet (sucks that I can't get Firefox to use this)
KTorrent (now comes installed by default)
            Kompose
Katapult (now comes installed by default)
            Blender
            GIMP
            KChmViewer
            3D Desktop
            KPager
            Firefox
            and some restricted formats (libxine-extracodecs, w32codecs, flashplugin-nonfree)

            That enough?

Re: getting the best outta kubuntu

after a base install, I usually immediately install these before going hog wild :

mc Midnight Commander (console gui file manager/text editor that imo should be installed by efault as it is much easier to use if your video is mucked up/etc)
                    firefox
Synaptic for package management in place of Adept
Nvidia-glx and the k7 kernel stuff

Then I grab the, um basics for me:
Latest KDE, amarok and codecs, Mysql server (for amarok database) Gimp, Firefox, Build-essential, kdelibs-dev, gwenview image viewer, kget, mplayer, codecs and mozilla-mplayer (firefox media plugin), flash, java, knode, kweather and varoius other Kontact bits, sbackup for backup duties, yakuake pulldown terminal

Then I usually end up later installing :
Kino, wine, gimp krecipes (using mysql for its database), kdirstat for graphical disk info, and whatever catches my fancy at the moment

                    then for the mrs:
kdegames for a nice selection of games
                    thunderbird

Then I install cedega and Pixel image editor

I usually take a while to get to this point and beyond, as quite often I may not install something until I first use it, so my list of things to install is always in flux, especially if i compile source code as the dev packages needed vary a little, and quite often I may try a whole different set of apps just to check them out and not even install my usual choices.
