touchpad and keyboard issues

Hello,
I'm new to Linux and wanted to try to set up my laptop with both windows and kubuntu. I just burned a live cd and used it to test kubuntu before I installed it. Unfortunately, I had a lot of difficulty using the new os because my touchpad failed to work, so I plugged in my usb mouse and it worked fine. I later realized that my laptop's built-in keyboard didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
