Karmic laptop won't boot with anything in USB

I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 on an Asus laptop donated to the church. It had no operating system on it when received, so I don't know what issues are inherent to it and what to Kubuntu. Also, there does not seem to be much info on the properties of this laptop generally. Asustek website is no help at all.

When anything is plugged into the USB port (mem stick, mouse, etc.) it will not boot. Neither regular boot nor restore boot will complete. Unplug it all and everything is fine. Has anyone seen this and is there a Kubuntu fix?

Likely the BIOS is set to boot from USB first. IF none of the plugged in USB devices have a bootable partition...

Enter the BIOS on first powerup and check the BOOT order. IF USB is set first, change the order so that HD is first.
