installing firefox

Hello,
I am a complete novice when it comes to this sort of thing - I have installed kubuntu on my laptop and I now want to install firefox - everything I read suggests that I should just be able to do it through add/remove programs in adept installer. It is there but it is greyed out and I don't know how to un-grey it??

I believe there is a nice graphical installer in the Internet menu

Sorry, your guna need to dumb it down a bit.
Im not sure what a graphical installer is?
In the internet menu there is a "Graphical frontend to SAFT" not sure what that is either - but its greyed out as well anyway!

My K -> Internet menu contains an item to install Firefox...

They were so proud of it they even mentioned it in the release announcement

Thanks - I had a look at that.
Sadly I dont have that fancy version of Kubuntu - I believe mine is either 7.04 0r 7.10 (something else im not sure of)
I did try to install an updated version - but as you can gather I'm not very good at this, so it wasnt very successful.

Hi

Type Konsole in your start menu and then click on the icon

This should take you to the command prompt

You could then copy and paste this:

sudo apt-get install firefox

You will be asked for an administrator password

Type that in and don't worry that you see nothing on the screen as you type

Hit enter and see if it downloads and installs that way

I have tried this before - I just tried it again and as usual I got this message:

ben@ben-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install firefox

Package firefox is not available, but is referred to by another package.

is only available from another source

I think this doesnt work because when I go to adept manager and search firefox it is there and says that is installed - I just don't know how I use it??

I'm fairly a new user myself so hopefully someone else can correct me...

But i wonder if the problem is that the version of Firefox that would run with your version of Kubuntu is no longer available in the
repository because it is so old and has been updated a few times since

If that is the case, then you might enounter similar version related problems elsewhere

Is there anyway for you to get hold of a more up to date version? Ibex (8.10) or Jaunty (9.04) would be ideal as well as the current Karmic (9.10) which has an installer built into the menu

Thanks for advice - would be good to know if I am completely wasting my time trying to do something that isnt ever going to work!
As I said in earlier post - I have tried to download newer versions but I don't know how to do it? and how to delete old versions as I have about 4 of the same version installed now.

Any ideas on that one??

1- is this a brand new install?

2-what version?

open a konsole and type /usr/bin/firefox ....what happens?.. and what errors if it dosent open?

if this is a brand new install you nead to do in a konsole

sudo apt-get update

to refresh the package cake first then you can try to install things.

firefox dos work fine I'm on it now

In that case, I think the safest option might be to burn it to CD

Backup any personal files you want to keep

And then do a fresh re-install wiping everything

www.kde.org has user friendly instructions for downloading a CD image of the software

Im not sure if it is a brand new install, as adept manager says that its already installed

first I was asking if it was a new install OF Kubuntu.

but I see it's feisty.......and thats farley old.

and for some reson you'r not conecting to the repo's.........you do have net on the box dont you?
