    DVD/CD Drive

Hi I am runing Kubuntu Jaunty amd 64 and have just purchased a new dvd/cd drive to replace my old broken one. It is a Pioneer DVR-213LS. It is reconised in my BIOS so I know it is physically installed correctly, however when Kubuntu is running it will not do anything open, read, etc.

Is that very new hardware? Hardware support always lags a few months behind in Linux, because someone goes ahead and includes the support for the new device in the kernel, and then this gets propagated to the distributions like Kubuntu. So, if this device was released a few months back, there is the chance that support will begin in Karmic. You don't need to upgrade, you may just burn a live cd to a bootable usb, boot and see if it recognizes the device.

Another thing you can do is open "konsole" and tpe "lshw", and see if it is listed as a device ...
