Problem with Ultra ATA controller under recent kernels

    Hi,
Before upgrading to Karmic, I was using kernel 2.6.24.24 which seems to be incompatible with Karmic.
If I use kernel 2.6.31.14 , smartcl does not work properly and sooner or later the system does not respond.
Many disk errors although the disk is clean:
Oct 31 17:25:06 T7400 kernel: [ 163.730179] sd 11:0:1:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: ATA pass through information available
    Oct 31 17:25:06 T7400 kernel: [ 163.730928] sd 11:0:1:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Recovered Error [current] [descriptor]
Oct 31 17:25:06 T7400 kernel: [ 163.730932] Descriptor sense data with sense descriptors (in hex):
    Oct 31 17:25:06 T7400 kernel: [ 163.730934] 72 01 00 1d 00 00 00 0e 09 0c 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Oct 31 17:25:06 T7400 kernel: [ 163.730942] 00 4f 00 c2 00 50

I had similar problems with kernel 2.6.27-14-generic

My computer is a Dell T7400 with an Intel 631xESB/632xESB/3100 Ultra ATA storage controller.
This controller uses the AHCI driver (as reported by lspci -vnn)

Could someone kindly help me ?
