package dependancy problem [SOLVED]

Hi,

I'm new to Kubuntu, and just installed 9.10 onto my laptop. Everything works great, but while I'm learning how to use kubuntu I found this error when trying to add software using the software manager:

"There are broken dependecies on your system. Please use an advanced package manage e.g. Synaptic or aptitude to resolve this situation."

How do I resolve this problem?

Hi, and welcome!

If the package manager a allows you to do that, can you please install Synaptic? Then, run it (with the other packager manager closed). Then, you need to do this:

unfortunately, this is one of the new KPAckageKit's bugs - it cannot handle broken dependency problems.

To quickly check what the specific problem, you need to run Konsole and enter the command:

sudo apt-get update

this manually updates the package list

If that gives no errors, then try installing a program you were trying to install when KPackageKit gave you the error

sudo apt-get install <name-of-package>

Then post the error messages here so we can see them.

This sort of error happens sometimes when the package list is not up to date, or when an added repository introduces conflicts. Or the package in question is simply incorrectly packaged

Helloo and welcome to Kubuntu .

Now let's get down to busyness, do the following:

Open terminal (Konsole) and write:
’sudo dpkg --configure -a’ without the quotes and press enter, type in your password when asked and press enter (or return if keyboard is like that), afterwards, reboot. This should help to fix any broken packages that are missing due to upgrade problems. Do not worry if when u r typing in your password nothing is showing :P it's your secret password so it doesn't show it. :P just type it in.

I was able to get the problem resolved through Konsole - and the apt-get install commands.

Everything is working ok now.

How do I resolve this problem?

Open a console and type:

sudo apt-get install synaptic

That is, if you want a 'good' GUI package manager. Synaptic works very well.

It's been solid here in Karmic. It is missing some features like fixing broken packages and some others, but it's not broken anymore (like in Jaunty)

If you can boot into recovery mode. Please try selecting 'dpkg Try to fix broken packages.'. If not try the other solutions.
