I would check to see if you have access to login at all:

CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to TTY1, then type in your user name and password.

If that works, then there might be an issue with X-windows. Security measures are put in place to prevent someone from stealing or viewing your X-session. I would then create a completely new user and try to login through KDM with the new user.

It is possible to fix the problem you are having. However, if there are no valuable files on the computer, I would recommend a fresh install. There is much to learn in fixing the issue, but the frustration you'd have to go through might not be worth it.
