    What to backup??

    Hi,

I thinking of formating my pc where I'm using 9.04 version, but I have beeign upgrading it from 8.04 version. It's starting to get a litle slow.
So, my question is: What do I need to backup, to save all my configurations? The Home folder? Does it contain, for instance, my Thunderbird mails?

    Thanks

    Re: What to backup??

Yes, the /home/<username>/ has the the settings for a user.

KDE (and KDE applications) are saving to the /home/<username>/.kde/...

But some of the settings are at the /home/<username>/.local/...
    and /home/<username>/.config/...

Mozilla (Firefox and the Seamonkey) are saving to the /home/<username>/.mozilla/...
Note ! I'm using those directly from the Mozilla !

Opera is saving to the /home/<username>/.opera/...
OpenOffice is saving to the /home/<username>/.openoffice.org/...

There seems to be a thunderbird directory: /home/<username>/.thunderbird/...

The Dolphin > View and turning the "Show Hidden Files" on will reveal more.

The safest way is to backup the whole /home/<username>/.

There probably is a specification > Freedesktop.org "These are not really standards"
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

If your user name is labarc, then backup everything under /home/labarc. Don't forget to backup other users' home directories too!

You may have customized some settings in /etc, such as /etc/samba/smb.conf. Back them up if you don't want to recreate from scratch.

Some programs look for data files in the /usr/local hierarchy. You may want to backup such data files if you manually installed them. Examples:
      • /usr/local/share/games/doom/doom.wad
      • /usr/local/lib/timidity
      • /usr/local/share/kegs/ROM.01

Do you have more partitions on you hard disk than just "/" and "swap"? If so then you may want to backup those partitions as well.

        Thanks for the answers.

And when I want to restore the Home folder, the programs will automaticaly get the data?

Yes, they should - here with the separate home /1/, /2/ they have done so.
