    Kmiw doesn't launch

    Hey,
i've downloaded skype successfully but when i make a call i have audio but no sound is recorded. I figured i'd check the sound settings in Kmix but when i try to open it the icon bounces but the program doesn't launch.
I had a look around and found an old thread that suggested uninstalling Kmix, and then reinstall using the following .deb file :

    http://launchpadlibrarian.net/225558...untu2_i386.deb

which downloaded the files needed ; I then right clicked on the icon and selected install via gdebi installer.

However, Kmix still fails to launch properly. Does anyone have another solution ?

    Thanks

    Hi

KMix should run from the proper source. If you don;t mind, I would just remove it, and install once again from the official repository. Then, open "konsole" from the menu, type "kmix", and see the output. If you post any error messages here we may be able to help out.

    best!

Concur with lmilano -- when you have a package available in the standard repos, it is always best to install that one, versus a downloaded package.

Regarding sound and Skype -- first get sound working correctly on your system in the normal manner, i.e. with alsaplayer or Amarok or whatever you use. Make sure the mic input is not muted. Once you have reliable playback on the system, then plug in your headset and try Skype.

My experience with Skype indicated it was very picky about the headset - it would not work with a standard cheap headset. I had to go pay $30 USD for a USB "Skype-certified" headset, and then it did work correctly. So, if sound works correctly on your system, but Skype won't, then you might need to look at the headset hardware.

ok followed your instructions and was told kmix wasn't installed properly ; therefore, typed:
        sudo apt-get install anon-proxy
        bash: mix : commande introuvable

which installed kmix... however i'm now being asked :Pour pouvoir naviguer de façon anonyme, votre navigateur doit utiliser │

        │ │
        │ Faut-il définir la variable «http_proxy»? │
        │ │
        │ <Oui> <Non> │
do i select to define the variable "http_proxy" or not? sorry if the question shows my lack of understanding but i figure it best to ask when unsure of the consequences.

        thanks for the help

Arrg, I understand very ittle French, but let me back up a bit, what do you mean by this?

ok followed your instructions and was told kmix wasn't installed properly ; therefore, typed:
            sudo apt-get install anon-proxy
            bash: mix : commande introuvable
I am seriously at a miss. How do you install software? Did you use a graphical program like synaptic? (KPackageKit is broken unfortunately in Jaunty). What was the error message when trying to install kmix? Why did you try to install anon-proxy?

Also, when you call it from the command line, the name is "kmix", not "mix".

ok, i'm going to try and read a bit more about Terminal before i waste any more of your time. I'll come back and ask yu again if i don't get any further by myself.
              thanks for your help...

Our pleasure. They anon-proxy will only get in the way, it helps you set up a proxy server so that you can browse the web anonymously, which can be useful in some cases but will only get on the way for this. So, in short, I would not install it now. Also, you may want to install Synaptic and install software with that. It is much, much better.
