    Question about WIFI in Kubuntu.

The last time I quit using Linux it was because I could never get the WIFI working. Kubuntu seems to have a built in WIFI connection utility, my question is... how do i use it? I have messed around with it for a few minutes and cant figure it out, can anyone help me out. Give me a basic run down of how to use it. Thanks!

You need to tell us what version of Kubuntu you are using.

Re: Question about WIFI in Kubuntu.

This is a widely discussed topic in these forums. Just search on "wireless".

Also, please take a look at THIS PAGE at the official Ubuntu Community Support Wiki. It is an index to a lot of useful information on both wired and wireless networking in 9.04. Unfortunately, a great deal of the details are discussed in terms of Gnome, rather than KDE, but people here can translate the Gnome commands to KDE for you, if necessary.

Well I looked through some stuff and cant seem to find anything that helps or is KDE or Kubuntu specefic to what I have, when I pull up the wireless manager in my system tray under the wireless it just says WLAN Interface and under that it says unavailable. Does this mean it isnt seeing my card or it isnt seeing the wireless connection? those ubuntu instructions made it sound pretty easy but this seems to be totally different from ubuntu.

Ok I got the driver for my Wireless card installed. now it can see my network, it just doesnt want to connect. I had a wep password on there and entered it and it didnt work. then i took the password off, that didnt work, now i set it to 128 bit 13 digit password, that isnt working. any ideas?

Re: Question about WIFI in Kubuntu.

I can tell you that getting wireless to work with Jaunty (Kubuntu 9.04) requires some patience.

I 'm using a Linksys router with WPA2 and hidden network SSID.

Kubuntu 9.04 identifies all networks, and hidden networks. Once you have entered the, in your case, WEP, key, you need to wait some time for it to connect. I used to think that it wasn't working, I added another network and having two with the same SSID seemed to upset it, so I deleted the older one and started a new one and it connected. One day, after turning my computer on, I was doing something else for a few minutes and it connected automatically to the network, it just took a minute or so, I expected it to happen within a few seconds.

You will be pleased to know that Kubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) connects much faster.

Thats exactly what I did to make it work as well, I finally got it working altthough i disabled the wep on my WIFI, im not really in the mood to enable it again to get it working now lol. It seems to be working just fine the way it is! Thanks!
