Thunderbird-Firefox Size Problem

Just installed Kubuntu 9 and installed Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. They installed OK but the size of the images and forms within them is greatly enlarged. For example, on the Google Search page, the search box is almost right across the page. In Thunderbird, the distance between the address lines of a new message are over a half an inch apart. Some assistance would be appreciated.

What happens in Firefox when you hit Ctrl + "+" and Ctrl + "-" keys? (That's hold down Ctrl and hit the "+" and "-" keys). Images and text should be resized.
