    Bugger.

I decided to have two partitions for /
you can have as many / partitions as you like.

You can only have one /home. I think I mentioned that somewhere not sure anymore

So, get rid of your 9.04 /home partiton, merge it with your 8.04 /home and use that as your /home for both distros.

at install of 9.04 assign /home (8.04), do not format!!! and make a new user (different from your 8.04 user !) and continue as before.

The install complained about having 2 / partitions not 2 /home.

Oh, okay. During install you can only assign one /. so assign the partiton that is designated for 9.04 as /.
        leave your 8.04 partition alone.

So in 9.04 install, assign no mountpoints for the partitions sda2 and sda3 which were assigned /home and / in 8.04 install, and assign /home and / as mountpoints for sda7 and sda8 in 9.04 install. Is this what you mean?

If something goes wrong in 9.04 install, will I still be able to boot into 8.04 painlessly without reintalling it.

I don't see what should go wrong, but as long as 9.04 hasn't installed grub (which comes last in the install process) then you will be fine.
Otherwise you can always reinstall grub at any time.
