That's what I did although I wasn't real happy about installing all those GNOME libraries. I've been a GNOME user for years and am transitioning to KDE because Linus said I should

So far the transition hasn't been painless but I will say that KDE 4.3 is closer to being ready for primetime than anything I've seen from KDE developers in years. I think kpackagekit really needs some help to be anywhere close to as useful as synaptic but I think it'll get better.

The problem is that there really hasn't been a good KDE based graphical package manager in years. I'm talking not just debs, but rpms and yum as well. There have been a number of unsuccessful attempts (the worst being the misnamed Adept), but nothing matches Synaptic, especially in it's handling of "recommended" and "suggested" dependencies. Kpackagekit is the KDE wrapper for Packagekit, which is the latest attempt at a universal package manager. If enough people (developers) support it, it will get better.

Personally, I don't like Gnome (never have) so when I install Synaptic I drag in a distro's worth of GTK based libraries purely to support Synaptic. The advantages are that Synaptic has undergone a series of incremental improvements over the years, and I'm used to the interface. If you're coming over from a straight Ubuntu installation, you won't have to add anything.

In accordance with the Debian Policy Manual (which says "The 'Recommends' field should list packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations"), the package management system now installs packages listed in the Recommends: field of other installed packages as well as Depends: by default. If you want to avoid this for specific packages, use apt-get --no-install-recommends; if you want to make this permanent, set APT::Install-Recommends "false"; in /etc/apt/apt.conf. Be aware that this may result in missing features in some programs.

(This change was made in Ubuntu 8.10.)

I'm really beginning to think that Rog131 is either:
1) The worlds first Linux AI
or
2) A traveler from an inter-dimensional universe were Linux is the OS of choice, and Kubuntu is the 'lingua franca'
