Make COM port work using VirtualBox

I am using Kubuntu 9.04 with VirtualBox (Win2000). Does anyone know how to make the COM ports work in virtualbox? I have specific software and devices that need direct serial communication using Win2000. Will VirtualBox recognize, for example, a prolific usb to serial adapter?
