[SOLVED] Can not log in to Hardy

I have seen various threads on the net that are SIMILAR to my issue, but in my case, I have NOT updated/upgraded/re-installed anything. We had a power outage (Blackout" today and when the electricity came back on, we can not log in at all. We do get the graphical login screen, we can select users and type in passwords but when we hit Enter, it goes to a black screen for a second or two, we see the animated swirling dots then are brought back to the graphical login screen again. Have tried changing session types, have tried failsafe login, have tried text based login. No luck. It doesn't help that I am un-learned in the ways of the great Linux Gods !!!
    PLEASE help ;-)

      Thanks Arochester.
Followed the links, SOMEHOW managed to run df -h at a console and found disk FULL.
Next thing is HOW to delete some files from console so I can free some space to allow the system to start properly.
      Any hints for this task?
I appreciate your time and effort , Cheers.

Re: Can not log in to Hardy

No worries now !! I managed to work out (with some searching) how to find a directory and delete unwanted files. Then I restarted the system and it all worked as expected.
Thanks for everyone's interest and especially arochester for great advice
