    removing kubuntu !!!

Please help me I'm an idiot !!!

I have just installed kubuntu and overwritten my son's XP (and his music files and homework!!). The options I chose during the installation have wiped out all traces of XP and I neeed to get it back so that my son can carry on using his PC and doing his homework.

I have a disk with an XP installation .exe file and have set the boot order to boot from CD but kubuntu starts every time.

I know you all swear by kubuntu but I am just not ready for it yet, please please please can anybody help?

Did you install Kubuntu on a separate disk partition or on the same partition that XP was on? If it was on the same partition, I have bad news for you.

We may have a lot in common.

What options did you actually chose when you "installed"? If you wrote to the same partition then it's all gone. However, is it possible that you didn't actually install to the hard disk and are still running off the CD? Is it still in the tray? That would explain why Kubuntu keeps coming back. If you set the BIOS to boot from CD, and I guess you did because you got Kubuntu to boot when you "installed", then the XP disk should boot too. No? Perhaps the XP disk isn't bootable though. The other question is were there no backups of your files? For anything important, there really, really, should be. Your son should have learnt that in school.

      Good luck!

I think you really installed Kubuntu over XP and all your son's XP staff is gone.
I doubt that you really have XP installation disk, because that disk should overwrite Kubuntu. There are several dictionaries on it, starting with docs, dotnetfx etc. and there is only one exe file named setup.exe. And original label with Windows XP on it. And you must have 25 characters installation code somewhere.

No way to get it back if it does not let you choose Windows XP when booting. (Normally, you need to press escape key to see the boot options)
<br />Have YOU signed the Ubuntu code of Conduct? I did it at 10 AUG, 2009!

Dude, let us know because everyone is willing to help. We are sorry that happened. But Help us out. Please answer the questions that we are asking, so we can give you a hand. Now, is the installation cd still in the cd tray? If it is then pull it out. At first you are going to come up to the boot menu, usually it is going to give you an option to boot to Linux or Windows XP. To get to that menu hit the "ESC key" after the BIOS start and you are going to get there. If you chose to partition the hard drive you are going to see windows XP somewhere. Choose that option. If you do not see Windows XP somewhere. You might have to install windows xp from your disk.

Again, sorry for what you are going through.

I guess like most people here, I've done an awful lot of Linux installations, and even the installers from 10 years back would warn you about data loss etc. You simply cannot do it by mistake unless you don't believe the warnings.

My guess is that the OP was just running live and he left the CD in the tray. He didn't say that he put the XP disk in the machine, he just said he had one. Oh well, If he doesn't post back, I guess we'll never know. I hope he does so we can maybe help him.
