What the hell do you reffer to? If you mean .deb packages, then most of them unpack to /usr/bin. You should not go there, by the way, they will mostly have shortcuts in menu.

if you mean installing new programs then open the menu, applications, system, package manager.

KPackageKit does not work. You need something else, synaptic maybe.

By files I assume you are referring to programs since you say install. I find programs by typing "which program-name" in a terminal window. For example, if you have just installed the joe editor then if you type "which joe" you will get "/usr/bin/joe" because joe is in /usr/bin. Other programs go elsewhere. Type "which alsa" and you will see "/sbin/alsa". I hope this is what you wanted.

There's not normally any reason to need to find installed executables, in Linux. That's a Windows problem.

You'll find lots of things run faster. Also, as things get cached, you'll find some things even get faster with time. The number of files doesn't have anything to do with the speed because linux does not use a faulty file system - that's why you don't need to run defrag to fix it.

Ah, if you want a graphical installer or something, use Synaptic (use terminal to install, "sudo apt-get install synaptic"
