By files I assume you are referring to programs since you say install. I find programs by typing "which program-name" in a terminal window. For example, if you have just installed the joe editor then if you type "which joe" you will get "/usr/bin/joe" because joe is in /usr/bin. Other programs go elsewhere. Type "which alsa" and you will see "/sbin/alsa". I hope this is what you wanted.

eaterjolly: im still getting use to linux (but my computer is mighty faster or is that because th reformat deleted 50Gigs
