Mplayer shows first frame, sound continues

*.AVI files from an SDHC card(vfat) from a video camera won't play in MPlayer. They show the first frame while the audio continues and the progress bar moves along as though it's playing like normal. However, no other frame shows at all.

I tried moving them to HDD, to no avail. I have all the codecs I know of, no go. I have all the playback plugins I found in my search for answers, nothing. What gives?

I'm relatively new to Linux and have only been exclusive for a few months. So forgive me my ignorance if there's something obvious that I'm missing. I'm used to M$ Windblows' "Damn the stability! Full speed ahead!" attitude.

That's the only thing I prefer about Windows: If it doesn't quite know what to do with it, it tries anyway; and if it still can't, at least it tries to find a solution; "Would you like Windows to search for the drivers/codecs/formats?"(though this is not always successful and can lead to disaster). Linux seems to demand micromanagement. I don't really want to spend hours/days trying to get a video from my own d4 camera to play.

It also doesn't seem to want to play DVDs, though the movies and videos I've downloaded play just fine. Click on a *.avi, *.wma, etc. and MPlayer opens and plays it better than the default Dragonplayer. But DVDs and Memsticks seem to confuse the heck out of it. Help?
If you think that by threatening me you can get me to do what you want... Well, that's where you're right. But - and I am only saying that because I care - there's a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as tasty as the real thing.

    Getting the error messages

When an application is not working, start the application throught the konsole. There will (should) be an error message.

    With the mplayer:
    Code:
    mplayer /path/to/the/clicp

What i'm installing to enable video/audio

    - kubuntu-restricted-extras
    - non-free-codecs
    - ffmpeg
    - mplayerthumbs
    - libdvdcss2

If you want to use the mplayer a good front end is the SMPlayer. The SMPlayer has logs: smplayer > options > view logs (SMPlayer/MPlayer)

Re: Mplayer shows first frame, sound continues

On a related note, I have been having considerable problems of late with DV I have taken from my camcorder with Kino and then converted to mpeg. Using Mplayer, Kaffeine etc etc playback seems to start off Okay but then video freezes for a couple of seconds then races to catch up. Basically it's a mess. I thought this might have something to do with the fact that due to shortage of HDD space I tell kino to drop the DV files onto a USB Hard Drive. However, if I burn the Mpeg to a DVD using Kmediafactory it plays perfectly in a DVD player suggesting that all is Okay. The Mpeg plays fine using VLC. So does the DVD although using mplayer, Kaffeine etc I get the same problem.

I had assumed for some time that because all my apps behaved in the same way that I was doing something wrong in the creation of the mpeg. However, it now seems to me that there is an issue with one of the applications that mplayer, kaffeine etc all share. As and when I have a bit of time I will try to diagnose the problem but in the meantime I am using VLC. It might be worth the OP giving that a whirl - I suspect that will solve the problem as I think VLC operates on a stand-alone basis?.

Okay, tried opening it from command line. No go. Here's what I got:

        "$ mplayer /home/{$myname}/DCIM/100MEDIA/IMAGE4O.AVI
        MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.3.3 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
        CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz (Family: 6, Model: 13, Stepping: 8)
        CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
        Compiled with runtime CPU detection.
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control.

        Playing /home/{$myname}/DCIM/100MEDIA/IMAGE40.AVI.
        File not found: '/home/{$myname/DCIM/100MEDIA/IMAGE40.AVI'
        Failed to open /home/{$myname}/DCIM/100MEDIA/IMAGE40.AVI. "

So. . . MPlayer isn't finding the file - either on the HDD or the stick. What socket is it not finding? What are CPUflags(I think I used to kow)? If it can't find it, how in the heck does it play the sound and first frame? Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? If Jessica breaks up with Frankie will their babies still look like Phil Spectre without the charm? And. . . Oh gawd, I'm rambling like a panicked emo-tween.

I'm going to go see whatever of that stuff you suggested is installed and install whatever's not installed. I'm also gonna try and find that LIRC(whatever that means) so I can use the Remote Control that my computer came with. That would be cool. :-)
If you think that by threatening me you can get me to do what you want... Well, that's where you're right. But - and I am only saying that because I care - there's a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as tasty as the real thing.

That "File not found:" error is very strange

Here, if the there is not proper codec (for the mplayer):
