Working in a Dual World... HELP!

    Hello,

I'm a first time Linux user as of this past April with Kubuntu 9.04. It been great and a huge learning experience. However, do to work I still need to use and work with MS Excel and Word. I don't want to dual boot only as a last resort. I've tried them under WINE and it's close but all the fonts and sizings are off. Also macro don't work. Then I tried Sun's VirturalBox and got it working but access to any shared file locations are very very slow. Also as good as OpenOffice is it still doesn't format the same. What I need is some easy way to edit these types of files back and forth between the two worlds. Any suggestions? How do others do it? I really want to stay with Linux, but unfortunately I can't completely shake M$ yet. As a side note I did remember reading something about loading the proprietary M$ fonts, but I can't find it any more. Maybe that might help OpenOffice and/or a WINE implementation enough to get by. Appreciate the help. Struggling.

The font installer is located in SystemSettings, 2nd line up from the bottom. You should be able to install the fonts from your windows installation. As long as you own a legitimate copy of windows, there should be no issue with using them.

There is also an msttcorefonts package in the repository, but it might not have the fonts you need.

There is a commercial version of wine called "crossover" which is specifically designed for running msoffice. I have no experience with it, but it works for some. You might also take a look at the winehq web site for additional info on running msoffice.

      Welcome to the party

Then I tried Sun's VirturalBox and got it working but access to any shared file locations are very very slow.
Use samba to share between windows and linux. It was built for that purpose.

I have a windows xp running in vmware player as a quest and sharing is a cinch.

To make a workable vmware windows guest you can use vmware converter.

As the druid mentioned getting the fonts is no real issue.

Thanks for the quick response. I wanted to let you to know that I very easily pulled over the MS fonts and that solved about 90% of the problems. Now MS Word docs look almost the same in WINE and OpenOffice. For whatever reason OpenOffice margins seem to be slightly different. So for now WINE is fine. As for MS Excel, WINE is a no go due to macro handling issues, but OpenOffice appears on the surface to be ok. Looking at Crossover, it shows Excel 2003 as Silver, not Bronze as is in WINE. So maybe it works better. I'm investigating. Thanks again for the help,
