Can not get the wireless USB Stick to work

I am a real newbie and just managed to install [i]Kubuntu 2.6.10.5-Powerpc on my old 600MHz iBook. The problem is that I cant get the wireless Airport card to work. I also have a Netgear W111 USB Crad that works great on my PC with Ubuntu 9.04, but with the same sad resualt when I connect it (I can see it when I check the attached USB devices)..

When I check the wireless manager it semes that all my network hardware (WiFi and LAN) is disabled. Do I need to download some drivers or is there another way for a total novice like me to get it to work. Grateful for some help explained in a manner that a total newbie can understan

You seem to use Kubuntu network manager. I would start to solve problems with wireless by installing wicd instead. If you do not use shell commands for installations, you should use synaptic to install wicd and to get rid of kubuntu network manager properly.

Thank you for your kind answer. I downloaded the Wicd program (Debian version) and was hoping it would install as neatly as in Ubuntu, by just doubleclick on the package. But all what happen is that a program called Ark start, I think its some kind of archive unpacker. I have installed the standard wifi program before I did this try out. Any suggestions how to install it. The program now recide on my desktop....

That shows that you do not know about automatically downloading and installing from repository.

Look at "Top 20 Kubuntu FAQs & Answers" on http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099811.0

Look first at questions 11a and 11b about installing. Then look at question 8a about wireless networking.

Take care with Wicd. It will remove Knetwork manager and you could end up with no network connectivity at all... There was a Howto about installing Wicd , but I can't find it at the moment (Technical help appreciated here!)

What is important with your wireless, from a Linux point of view, is the chip it uses. I think it is a Broadcom . Wicd might be able to deal with that. With that warning you can install it by connecting to the internet, opening a Terminal and inputting: sudo apt-get install wicd

            1) Then look at question #11a as stated above. This leads to "How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" at http://amitech.50webs.com/installing/index.php.html
            2) Also look at "Installing Software in Ubuntu" on http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware and also on that site "Enabling Extra Repositories"
            3) Generally "Download the Linux Starter Pack" from http://www.tuxradar.com/linuxstarterpack
            4) Also look at "Kubuntu guide" on http://kubuntuguide.org/Jaunty

...and maybe 5) Watch a video called "How to install software" at http://www.linuxnewbieguide.org/cont...stall-software
