Still gettin the hang of linux

i'm new to linux/kubuntu. my friend put it on my computer while i was out. it was quite a pleasant surprise altho i'm still gettin used to it. one thing i've noticed is that its been real laggy, more so than my windows vista. i have most of the effects turned off. any other ways i can speed things up a bit?

also, on 2 occasions i've been getting a message when i boot up saying "Unclean shutdown, checking disk"
it will get to 55% and then lock up. i've tried checking the disc for defects but it comes up w/ no error. i rebooted and then it worked fine.
but i just restarted my computer a minute ago and i'm gettin the same problem. any help?

First, welcome to KubuntuForums and to Linux.
Second, there are many members here, comprising a wide range of experience using Linux and Kubuntu.
Third, in order to help/assist, it is very helpful (important) to provide *specifics* and not generalities. No one here has the ability (that I know of) to get into your head and read your thoughts.

    So, as to this post:

    1) What type of PC do you have Kubuntu on - Desktop, laptop, or netbook?
    2) What processor - Intel, AMD, ...
    3) How much RAM is in your PC?
    4) How large is the HD that Kubuntu was installed on?
    5) What manufacture/model of video graphics card/chip set is in your PC?
    6) What version of Kubuntu was installed?
    7) How was Kubuntu installed:
    a) sole Operating System (prior OS 'wiped clean')
    b) inside of Windows (WUBI install)
    c) additional OS - dual-booting with another OS
    d) I don't know

Answers to these questions will help us in getting you the right answer/solution.

      Hi

In addition, you can do Ctrl+Esc and sort processes by CPU usage. If you see any process taking over the CPU, please report the name.

Desktop effects: please turn them off all the way (disable them) for now and see if helps.
